My suggestion is to find a good outfitter near where you live, they are a wealth of information and can answer and show you much of what you need and I am sure you will get more ideas here on the forum.

You might also want to start attending our monthly meetings. We have many veteran fly fishermen that would be more than happy to share their knowledge with you. The chapter also runs monthly fishing trips, designed for beginners and old pros alike. Mike
